Iran’s Interests Section in Washington has strongly condemned the deportation of several Iranian refugees from the United States to Panama, stating that the process occurred without its knowledge or consular access.
In a statement on Friday, the Iranian office criticized what it described as an unjust and opaque deportation, highlighting that the individuals were expelled without visas, identity documents, or prior notification to Iranian authorities.
Under the US administration’s increasingly strict immigration policies, individuals without valid visas or legal residence are being deported. Iran’s Interests Section emphasized that, despite efforts made in coordination with the Iranian Embassy in Colombia—accredited to Panama—and the assistance of specialized lawyers, the deportation proceeded without diplomatic consultation. The office also reiterated that seeking asylum in a third country is not a crime under Iranian law, reaffirming that Iran remains open to its citizens.
This deportation aligns with a broader pattern established under former US President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, which included transferring migrants, including Iranians, to Panama aboard US military aircraft. The latest flight carried 119 individuals, accepted by Panama under a cooperation agreement with Washington.
A spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the treatment of the deported Iranians, asserting that the ministry would do everything possible to protect their rights. In response, Iranian authorities have instructed the Interests Section in Washington and diplomatic missions in South America to provide assistance to those affected.
