NYC schools welcomes new chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos amid administrative overhaul

As Mayor Eric Adams continues to navigate challenges following his federal indictment, New York City public schools are set for a significant leadership change with the appointment of Melissa Aviles-Ramos as the new schools chancellor. Aviles-Ramos, who starts her role on Wednesday, makes history as the highest-ranking Latina and Spanish-speaking leader in the city’s education system.

Previously, Aviles-Ramos served as deputy chancellor for family and community engagement and external affairs. Her extensive background in education includes experience as an English teacher, principal, and educational administrator, providing her with a comprehensive understanding of the city’s schools.

In addition to Aviles-Ramos’s appointment, Adams is making other key changes within his administration. Following the resignation of former Deputy Mayor Philip Banks, former prosecutor Chauncey Parker has been tapped to assume the role. Parker, who previously focused on public safety and gun violence mitigation as assistant deputy mayor, is expected to bring a new perspective to the position.

Despite recent resignations, including that of Dr. Ashwin Vasan, the city’s health commissioner, Adams expressed confidence in his administration’s depth. “We got a bench. We have a couple of people in the pipeline we’re speaking with and communicating with. There’s a deep bench in this city, and there’s a deep bench in this administration,” he stated, reassuring New Yorkers of ongoing efforts to fill key roles.

The search for a permanent police commissioner also remains ongoing, with Adams and his team reviewing a list of 22 candidates to find the best fit for the role.
