Mexico has extradited 29 high-profile drug cartel figures, including Rafael Caro Quintero, the notorious drug lord behind the 1985 murder of a U.S. DEA agent, as the Trump administration escalates pressure on organized crime.

The mass extradition, an unprecedented display of security cooperation, comes as top Mexican officials meet with their U.S. counterparts in Washington, hoping to prevent President Donald Trump’s threatened 25% tariffs on all Mexican imports starting Tuesday.

The prisoners were transferred from various Mexican prisons and flown Thursday to eight different U.S. cities. Among them were members of five of the six Mexican crime groups recently designated as “foreign terrorist organizations” by the Trump administration.

In addition to Caro Quintero, the extradited individuals included key cartel leaders, security chiefs from rival factions of the Sinaloa cartel, cartel finance operatives, and a suspect linked to the 2022 killing of a North Carolina sheriff’s deputy.
