Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce kicks off Harlem week virtual events, workshop

The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce has announced that its “HARLEM WEEK 2020” will kick off on Sunday August 16th, 2020, with a host of virtual events, workshops, and performances celebrating Harlem, to run through August 23, 2020.

The Harlem Week’s marquee event tagged, “A Great Day in Harlem,” will feature performances by Harlem Music Festival’s All Star Band featuring Ray Chew, Hezekiah Walker and a host of others, and it will include special appearances/past performances from Stephanie Mills, Janet Jackson, Anthony Hamilton, and Alicia Keys.

“A Great Day in Harlem” Features Performances by Harlem Music Festival’s All Star Band featuring Ray Chew, Hezekiah Walker, Erica Campbell, India.Arie, Ledisi, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Dance Theater of Harlem, NJPAC, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and IMPACT Repertory Theater.

The press release stated that this year’s traditional Harlem 5K Run will take place virtually throughout HARLEM WEEK 2020.

“The Virtual Harlem 5K Run Honoring Percy Sutton 100 and Charles Rangel 90 celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of former Manhattan Borough president Percy Sutton (1920-2009) and the 90th birthday of former U.S. Rep. Charles B. Rangel—both pillars of the Harlem community,” the release stated.

Michael Capiraso, president and CEO, New York Road Runners (NYRR), said, “The Harlem 5K is a longstanding annual tradition as part of HARLEM WEEK, and during these unprecedented times we are excited to be holding a virtual race for runners to be part of the celebration and Support Harlem Now.”

He added that “We are proud to continue this historic race honoring trailblazers Percy Sutton and Charles Rangel – and their many contributions and impact on Harlem and the community.”

The release describing the order of programs during the Harlem week explained that, programs which include; “Eat Local with Whole Foods”, a virtual panel discussion and cooking demonstration with local suppliers will hold on Monday, Aug 17th; Noon-1pm ET.

A “Youth Education Conference and Hack-A-Thon” geared toward middle and high school students will be presented with a challenge to solve digitally by creating an app, website or another digital solution will also hold on Monday, Aug 17; 1-4pm.

HARLEM WEEK is an annual celebration of the best of Harlem which works to promote its rich African-American, African, Caribbean, Hispanic and European history, as well as arts, culture, religion, business, entertainment and sports.
