UEFA has banned FC Barcelona from selling tickets to fans for their upcoming Champions League match after supporters displayed a controversial banner with Nazi overtones. The incident occurred during Barcelona’s recent 2-1 defeat to Monaco, where a black flag bearing the phrase “Flick Heil” was unfurled in reference to the team’s new German coach, Hansi Flick.
The governing body for European football announced the ban on Friday, stating that the club had been charged with “racism and/or other discriminatory conduct.” The sanction will be enforced during Barcelona’s next away match on November 6, when they face Red Star Belgrade.
This latest ruling marks a continuation of disciplinary actions against the club, stemming from a previous incident in April when fans were reported to have made Nazi salutes during a Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain. As part of the sanctions, UEFA has also fined Barcelona $11,000 and instituted a new probationary period that could lead to further penalties for any future violations.

Barcelona’s season has otherwise been stellar, with the team winning all seven of their matches in La Liga, making the Monaco defeat a rare setback. They are set to face Osasuna in their next fixture on Saturday, but the looming ticket sales ban for the Champions League match adds a troubling note to their campaign.
The club’s management will need to address these issues seriously to prevent further repercussions, as the spotlight intensifies on fan behavior in the sport.
