Newly inaugurated Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has convened his first Cabinet meeting on Friday, calling for unity and collaboration among his administration’s 109 members. Dressed in a military combat uniform, Prabowo led the meeting at the Magelang Military Academy, setting the tone for his ambitious “Red and White Cabinet.”
Taking office just last weekend after a decisive victory in the February presidential election, Prabowo, 73, succeeds Joko Widodo, who completed a historic two terms on October 20. His Cabinet, the largest since 1966, includes a diverse mix of ministers, deputy ministers, and agency heads, reflecting a commitment to comprehensive governance.
During the retreat, which spans three days, Cabinet members will strategize on key initiatives, including a pivotal free meals program for children, a highlight of Prabowo’s campaign. To ensure security and order, more than 4,100 combat personnel have been deployed around the venue.
Prabowo stressed the need for cohesive teamwork, stating, “The government must not work in silos, but they should work as a team.” He underscored the importance of the “Red and White Cabinet” recognizing the competitive global landscape Indonesia faces.
A significant focus of the meeting will also be on implementing anti-corruption measures, aligning with Prabowo’s commitment to transparency and accountability. As Southeast Asia’s largest economy navigates a complex array of challenges, this Cabinet meeting marks a critical juncture in shaping the nation’s future direction and policies.
