President Biden honors memory of Wadee Alfayoumi, calls for unity, action against hate

Wadee was killed in his home in Plainfield, Illinois, in a hate-fueled attack that also seriously injured his mother, Hanan Shaheen. The attacker now faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and hate crimes.

One year after the brutal killing of six-year-old Wadee Alfayoumi, a Muslim boy of Palestinian descent, President Joe Biden has marked the somber anniversary with a strong call to combat hate and violence in America. Wadee was killed in his home in Plainfield, Illinois, in a hate-fueled attack that also seriously injured his mother, Hanan Shaheen. The attacker now faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and hate crimes.

In his statement released on October 14, President Biden reflected on the family’s loss and the deep scars left by the tragedy. “We are grateful for Hanan’s recovery and her powerful voice for peace,” he said. “But we know the hole in their heart that remains without their beloved son. Days like this are hard because it brings it all back.”

Biden urged Americans to honor Wadee’s memory by rejecting hate and fostering understanding. “There is no place for hate in America, including hatred of Palestinians, Arabs, and Muslims,” he stated. Biden also highlighted his administration’s efforts to combat hate, pointing to legislation like the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act and the FBI’s increased focus on hate crimes.

The president’s message underscored the need for collective action to end violence and ensure that no one is made to feel unsafe because of their identity. “We can all reach across divides of background and belief to create greater understanding and unity in our country,” he said, calling on Americans to stand united against hate in all its forms.

May Wadee Alfayoumi’s memory continue to inspire peace and justice.
