Former President Donald Trump left attendees and social media users alike scratching their heads during a rally in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, on Saturday night, where he dedicated a bewildering ten minutes to reminiscing about golf icon Arnold Palmer.
Taking the stage shortly after 6 p.m., Trump spoke for around ninety minutes, but his lengthy tribute to Palmer, a Western Pennsylvania native who passed away in 2016, caught many off guard. After recounting details of Palmer’s life and career, Trump made an eyebrow-raising remark, stating, “He was all man. When he took showers with other pros, they came out of there and they said, ‘Oh my god, that’s unbelievable.'” He added that he “had to say it,” but held back from elaborating further, citing respect for the “highly sophisticated” women in attendance.
While rally attendees chuckled at the unexpected remarks, reactions on social media were more critical and confused. Richard Hanania, founder of the Center for the Study of Partisanship and Ideology, shared the video with a biting comment: “Imagine stuff he’ll be saying when his brain is four years older than this.” Former White House communications strategist TJ Adams-Falconer pointed out the absurdity of Trump ending a lengthy discussion with “a story about the size” of Palmer’s genitals. Sportswriter Pablo Torre humorously noted, “A nonzero number of Americans are voting for Trump so they can call stuff ‘gay’ again and meanwhile their guy’s out here lost in a reverie about the late Arnold Palmer’s literal penis.”
Media outlets joined the fray, with NJ.com describing Trump’s comments as “crude,” the Daily Mail calling them “bizarre,” and Politico labeling them as “raunchy.” The rally has raised eyebrows, particularly after previous unusual incidents, such as Trump remaining silent for over half an hour as attendees exited while unfamiliar songs played. Critics, including Vice President Kamala Harris, have suggested that Trump appears “exhausted,” with rallies becoming increasingly “confused” and disjointed, though Trump dismissed these claims, insisting, “She doesn’t go to any events.”
Kamala HQ, the social media hub for Harris’ campaign, labeled Trump’s comments a “long confused ramble.” Newsweek has reached out to Trump’s campaign for further comment on the rally’s peculiar moments.
