The UN High Commissional for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, has urged for an immediate cease-fire and a surge in humanitarian support to alleviate the growing crisis.

Grandi’s appeal came during a visit to the Lebanese capital of Beirut, where he met with displaced families and assessed the situation on the ground.

Speaking from a school sheltering displaced residents, Grandi emphasized the urgent need for a halt to the ongoing conflict. “What they need most is for airstrikes to stop so they can return home safely. A cease-fire in Lebanon is desperately needed,” he said, underscoring the gravity of the situation for those caught in the crossfire.

Grandi also met with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati to discuss the country’s worsening humanitarian conditions. He highlighted the immense strain on Lebanon, which has been enduring widespread Israeli airstrikes, and stressed the need for international support. “The scale of needs is overwhelming, and the assistance currently in place is nowhere near enough,” Grandi stated, calling for immediate global intervention.

His visit comes in the wake of increased Israeli military activity targeting Hezbollah in Lebanon, with airstrikes and a ground invasion into southern regions of the country that began on October 1. The conflict has further destabilized Lebanon, already burdened by economic collapse and the presence of millions of refugees from neighboring Syria.

Grandi’s trip, which will also include a stop in Syria, focuses on providing aid and addressing the displacement of both Syrian and Lebanese nationals who have fled the violence. The UNHCR has been mobilizing resources, but Grandi’s visit aims to ramp up international attention to the deteriorating situation. He expressed his commitment to standing in solidarity with those affected by the strikes, particularly as humanitarian needs surge beyond the capacity of existing efforts.

This call for a cease-fire highlights the fragile nature of the region, as civilians continue to suffer amidst intensifying hostilities. The need for international cooperation and immediate relief remains critical for Lebanon’s war-weary population.
