At the heart of their discussion was the need for the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, aimed at facilitating the safe return of civilians to their homes along the Israel-Lebanon border. The two leaders underscored ongoing initiatives to bolster the Lebanese Armed Forces and highlighted the necessity of international support for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
In response to the urgent humanitarian situation in Lebanon, Blinken announced nearly $157 million in U.S. assistance, reiterating the United States’ commitment to providing aid to those in need. “We must ensure that humanitarian efforts are prioritized, and our collective support is directed towards alleviating the suffering of civilians,” he stated.
Moreover, discussions extended to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, where both officials reaffirmed their commitment to achieving a durable ceasefire. They focused on releasing hostages, enabling a surge of humanitarian assistance, and alleviating civilian distress in the region. Blinken expressed gratitude to the Foreign Minister for Saudi Arabia’s pivotal role in addressing these pressing regional and global challenges, illustrating a shared dedication to peace and stability in a volatile landscape.
