Chief Service Officer Laura Rog has emphasized the indispensable role of AmeriCorps in New York City’s civic ecosystem, following Mayor Eric L. Adams’ endorsement of a bipartisan letter urging continued federal support for the national service program.

“We are one of the biggest cities in America where more than 6,400 AmeriCorps members are critical to serving 8.3 million New Yorkers each year,” said Rog.

“Every day, the Adams administration is working to create a safer and more affordable New York City where New Yorkers have access to what they need to thrive, and by signing this letter of support for AmeriCorps, we commit to working with leaders at all levels of government to ensure the force of AmeriCorps members who deliver essential services within 600 sites annually — including schools, food pantries, older adult centers, and other social service hubs in New York City — can continue to serve hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers.”

AmeriCorps has a proven track record of impact and cost-efficiency, with economists estimating that for every $1 invested by Congress, the program generates more than $17 in public benefits. In her statement, Rog highlighted how AmeriCorps bolsters civic engagement while strengthening New York City’s network of nonprofits, community organizations, and government services.

“Each and every AmeriCorps member in New York City improves the delivery of services, increases civic engagement, and strengthens the city’s network of nonprofit, community, and government organizations,” she added.

NYC Service, a division of the Mayor’s Office, has been integral to the city’s engagement with AmeriCorps, ushering over 2,300 members through its programs in the last 15 years. These members serve approximately 60,000 New Yorkers annually, addressing essential needs in areas such as education, hunger relief, and elder care. Rog underscored the dual benefits of the program: “

In addition to their direct impact on communities, an AmeriCorps experience refines every participant’s professional development to establish the foundation of a career in public service and a deep commitment to staying connected to their community.”

Rog expressed gratitude to Mayor Adams for his leadership, advocacy groups like Voices for National Service, and the city’s National Service Leadership Council partners. She also acknowledged the countless organizations and staff who continue to support current and future AmeriCorps members.
