“You don’t stand for me, I stand for you,” Adams said, acknowledging the efforts of community leaders like Mark Gjonaj, who he credited for uplifting Albanian voices. “He said the time has arrived for the Albanian community not to live in the shadows of the American dream but to enjoy the warmth of the freedom we offer.” Â
The mayor emphasized the significance of cultural preservation, urging Albanians to cherish their heritage while embracing their American identity. “No matter who you are, never abandon your culture,” Adams said. “When we raise the flag here, it symbolizes raising the spirit and energy of the Albanian community.” Â

Adams also applauded Albanian contributions to public safety, noting the presence of Albanian-descended members of the NYPD. “There’s no greater symbol of respect for this city than the men and women who serve and protect it,” he remarked. Â
Reflecting on the holiday season, Adams called for a spirit of giving. “As we move into Thanksgiving, remember it’s about giving, not receiving—that’s the Albanian way,” he said. Â
Adams shared a personal connection, mentioning his son’s recent visit to Albania. “He called me and said, ‘Dad, I don’t know if I’m coming back. I love Albania and what it represents.'” Â
The ceremony marked a historic moment for the Albanian community, symbolizing their lasting impact on New York City’s cultural fabric.
