A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has come into effect, ending over a year of intense fighting in Lebanon.

A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has come into effect, ending over a year of intense fighting in Lebanon. The agreement, which began at 4 a.m. local time, was brokered by the United States and France, marking what US President Joe Biden described as a “permanent cessation of hostilities.”

In a joint statement, the US and France emphasized the broader implications of the deal:

“The announcement today will cease the fighting in Lebanon, and secure Israel from the threat of Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations operating from Lebanon. This announcement will create the conditions to restore lasting calm and allow residents in both countries to return safely to their homes on both sides of the Blue Line.”

The arrangement aims to ensure compliance on both sides and avoid a resurgence of violence, with both nations pledging support for Lebanon’s recovery. “We remain determined to prevent this conflict from becoming another cycle of violence,” the statement continued.

As part of the deal, Washington and Paris will lead international efforts to strengthen the Lebanese Armed Forces and promote economic stability in Lebanon, signaling a push for long-term regional peace.

This ceasefire raises hopes but also questions about its durability, given the volatile history between the two sides. The coming weeks will reveal whether this agreement can indeed pave the way for sustained peace in the region.
