The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) intercepted a ballistic missile launched by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels on Sunday, preventing it from reaching central Israel.
The missile, neutralized by the advanced Arrow defense system, triggered air-raid sirens across central Israel, including Modi’in and Rehovot, as well as the hills surrounding Jerusalem. No injuries or damage were reported.
Military officials confirmed the missile was intercepted before entering Israeli airspace. “This is a testament to our advanced defense systems and operational readiness,” an IDF spokesperson stated. “We remain vigilant against threats from any direction.”
The attack adds to a growing list of Houthi provocations against Israel. In October, a missile caused fires and structural damage near Beit Shemesh but left no casualties. The Houthis have claimed their attacks are a show of solidarity with Hamas, following the October 2023 massacre.
Speaking last Thursday after a ceasefire in Lebanon, Houthi leader Abdul-Malik Badruldeen al-Houthi called on Yemenis to rally behind the Palestinian cause. “Gaza must not be left alone,” he declared. “The Zionist enemy and its allies must face resistance on all fronts.”
In response to the escalating aggression, Israel has conducted two airstrikes on Houthi-controlled areas in Hudeidah, a vital Yemeni port city. “Our actions are measured but decisive,” a senior Israeli defense official remarked. “We will not tolerate threats to our citizens, whether from Gaza, Lebanon, or Yemen.”
Regional analysts view the Houthi involvement as part of a broader strategy orchestrated by Iran to stretch Israel’s defenses. “The Houthis are acting as a proxy force in Iran’s campaign to destabilize the region and apply pressure on Israel,” explained Dr. Miriam Elazar, a Middle East security expert.
The IDF’s interception serves as a stark reminder of the expanding fronts in the Israel-Hamas conflict, with Yemen emerging as a significant player.
