King Charles III is hosting Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani on a state visit to the United Kingdom as the British government pushes for a significant trade deal with Gulf nations.

The two-day visit, beginning Tuesday, includes ceremonial events at Buckingham Palace and meetings with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, highlighting a diplomatic effort to deepen economic ties.

The Qatari emir, accompanied by his consort Sheikha Jawaher bint Hamad Al-Thani, was greeted at Kensington Palace by Prince William and Princess Catherine before joining King Charles at Horse Guards Parade for a ceremonial welcome. Queen Camilla, recovering from a chest infection, was absent from the arrival ceremony but is expected to attend other events, including a state banquet hosted at Buckingham Palace.

Prime Minister Starmer has prioritized securing a free trade agreement with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), encompassing Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. The UK government estimates the deal could inject £1.6 billion ($2 billion) into the economy, with Business Minister Jonathan Reynolds calling it a “priority.” Current trade between the UK and Qatar alone is valued at $6.8 billion.

“This visit underscores the strong partnership between Qatar and the United Kingdom, and we aim to strengthen it further,” said Reynolds.

The emir, educated in the UK and a graduate of Sandhurst military academy, maintains a close relationship with the British monarchy, having attended King Charles’ coronation and Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral. The visit also includes stops at Sandhurst and a special exhibition at Buckingham Palace showcasing ties between the two nations.

Middle East politics are likely to feature prominently in discussions between Starmer and Sheikh Tamim, given Qatar’s critical role as a mediator in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

The state visit reflects both nations’ strategic interests, blending diplomatic ceremonies with negotiations that could have significant economic and geopolitical impact.
