PHYLA.earth, a leader in regenerative agriculture, has announced its expansion into The Gambia through a partnership with local operator EcoHub.
This collaboration will establish pongamia nurseries and land regeneration projects, aimed at transforming degraded landscapes into productive agroforestry systems. EcoHub, co-founded by Nobel Peace Prize nominee and UN Women Ambassador for Africa, Jaha Dukureh, will serve as PHYLA’s local operating partner.
The initiative is part of a regional effort to scale agroforestry projects along the Great Green Wall, focusing on creating local employment, enhancing food and energy security, and fostering sustainable agricultural practices. The project will also include educational and certification programs supported by various foundations.
The Gambia Investment and Export Promotion Agency (GiEPA) facilitated the project, garnering significant government support. In November 2024, President Adama Barrow visited the project site during his Meet the People Tour, accompanied by GiEPA CEO Ousainou Senghore. President Barrow expressed strong support for the initiative:
“We are pleased to support this project through The Gambia Investment and Export Promotion Agency (GiEPA), which aims to transform unproductive land into thriving and productive landscapes while creating significant amounts of plant oil to boost the local economy.
This project not only provides food and energy security but will also help enable sustainable incomes for local farmers and create resilient climate-friendly agricultural and supply chain systems that can be replicated across the country and the wider region.”
With its focus on regeneration and sustainability, the PHYLA-EcoHub partnership is poised to deliver long-term benefits to The Gambia and the surrounding region.
