Egypt and Jordan have rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to displace Palestinians from Gaza into neighboring Arab countries, calling the suggestion a violation of Palestinian rights and a threat to regional stability.
Trump suggested on Sunday that Gaza’s population be moved to Egypt and Jordan to “clean out” the war-torn territory, calling the region a “demolition site” after 15 months of war. He proposed the relocation could be temporary or long-term.
Egypt’s foreign ministry condemned the idea in a statement, reaffirming the country’s “continued support for the steadfastness of the Palestinian people on their land.” The ministry added, “We reject any infringement on those inalienable rights, whether by settlement, annexation of land, or the uprooting of Palestinians through displacement, whether temporarily or long-term.”
Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi echoed the rejection, stating, “Our rejection of the displacement of Palestinians is firm and will not change. Jordan is for Jordanians, and Palestine is for Palestinians.”
The Arab League also denounced the proposal, labeling forced displacement as “ethnic cleansing.” The regional bloc declared, “Attempts to uproot the Palestinian people from their land, whether by displacement, annexation, or settlement expansion, have been proven to fail in the past.”
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, with whom Trump said he would speak on the matter, has repeatedly warned against such displacement, calling it a “red line” that threatens Egypt’s national security. Sisi emphasized that the forced removal of Palestinians would aim to “eradicate the cause for Palestinian statehood.”
Egypt’s foreign ministry urged the implementation of the two-state solution, stating that removing Palestinians from their territories would render such a resolution impossible. The Arab League reiterated this stance, emphasizing that forced displacement is a violation of international law and would only exacerbate the ongoing conflict.
Trump’s comments have reignited fears of plans to displace Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank, a possibility Egypt and Jordan have opposed since the war began in October 2023. Both nations remain steadfast in their stance, emphasizing the need for a just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that ensures Palestinians remain on their ancestral land.
