New York City Mayor Eric Adams has issued a statement in response to Governor Kathy Hochul’s Executive Budget for Fiscal Year 2026, expressing appreciation for the proposed measures that will help the city thrive.
Mayor Adams emphasized the shared goal of both leaders to ensure the safety and well-being of New Yorkers, highlighting key initiatives for public safety, mental health care, and affordability.
“We thank Governor Hochul for delivering an executive budget that will help our administration deliver on our core mission of making New York City the best place to raise a family,” said Mayor Adams. “Governor Hochul and I share the same North Star: to keep our city and state safe.”
Mayor Adams underscored the governor’s commitment to reforming laws related to mental health, aiming to connect individuals with serious mental illness to necessary treatment. He noted that combining these reforms with holistic support can provide much-needed care for those in need.
The mayor also addressed public safety concerns, focusing on repeat offenders who commit crimes across the five boroughs. “Justice and public safety can—and must—go hand-in-hand,” said Mayor Adams. He expressed eagerness to work with Governor Hochul on preserving vital parts of the 2019 discovery reforms while making targeted changes to reduce recidivism.
The mayor praised the governor’s focus on gun violence prevention programs and highlighted the recent collaboration between the city and state to deploy a surge of 300 NYPD officers to patrol overnight trains. “This and other agenda items will build on our track-record of working together to make New York City safer,” he said.
Affordability also remains a key priority for both leaders. Mayor Adams pointed to efforts to expand the child tax credit, invest in childcare, and push for the “Axe the Tax for the Working Class” proposal, which aims to put an average of $350 back into the pockets of over half a million New Yorkers. “This is a budget that meets the moment of our city and state’s affordability crisis,” he added.
Reflecting on their longstanding partnership, Mayor Adams commended Governor Hochul for her continued support of key city initiatives, including historic housing investments and the expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit. He concluded by reaffirming their joint commitment to making New York City a better place for all.
“Since day one of our administration, Governor Hochul has been a tremendous partner,” said Mayor Adams. “We look forward to continuing our partnership and engaging with the Governor’s Office to advance the rest of the city’s priorities as we deliver for New Yorkers.”
