Mayor Eric Adams has  presented a comprehensive agenda aimed at making New York City the best place to raise a family. Building on the successes of his administration in reducing crime, passing historic housing legislation, and saving New Yorkers billions, Adams unveiled new initiatives designed to create a safer and more affordable environment for families across the five boroughs.

ā€œIn the past year alone, our administration passed historic housing legislation, shattered the record for the most jobs in city history, drove major crimes down, and did so much more to build a family-friendly city. As a result of all these efforts, the state of our city is strong,ā€ Mayor Adams said. ā€œBut there is no denying that many New Yorkers ā€” especially our families ā€” are still anxious about the future. We have to make sure that the greatest city in the world is also the greatest place to raise a family. From keeping young people safe to tackling street homelessness, from building more family-friendly neighborhoods to saving New Yorkers millions of dollars, the initiatives we laid out today will make New York City the safest place to raise a family, the most affordable place to raise a family, and the best place to raise a family. My mother never stopped fighting to provide her family with a better life, and that is why I will never stop fighting to do the same for you.ā€

Adams emphasized his administrationā€™s commitment to making New York City the safest big city in America. Through measures like the $485 million blueprint to reduce gun violence and the $163 million investment in successful youth programs, the city is tackling crime and providing opportunities for at-risk youth. Adams also highlighted the $650 million investment to expand services for the homeless, including the addition of 900 Safe Haven beds and a new facility for individuals struggling with serious mental illness.

The mayor also focused on addressing the city’s housing crisis with the introduction of “City of Yes for Families,” a program designed to create more family-friendly neighborhoods. Under this initiative, the administration plans to introduce new zoning changes and policies that will support multi-generational homes and affordable housing development, as well as partner with the New York Public Library to bring 800 units of mixed-income housing to the Bloomingdale Library location. Adams also announced plans to create 80,000 new homes across the city, with a special focus on housing in Manhattan through the “Manhattan Plan.”

In addition, Adams unveiled measures to help working-class families financially, including his “Axe the Tax for the Working Class” proposal, which aims to return $63 million to 582,000 New Yorkers by cutting city income taxes. His administration has already saved New Yorkers billions through programs like the ā€œMoney in Your Pocketā€ initiative and free internet for 150,000 NYCHA households. Additionally, Adams introduced the “Neighborhood Internet” program to expand free internet access to thousands of low-income homes.

Mayor Adams also announced several initiatives aimed at improving education and creating new opportunities for students. The expansion of the ‘NYC Reads’ program and the introduction of financial education for every public school student by 2030 are part of his broader efforts to provide a first-rate education to New York City’s youth. The city also plans to expand its work-based learning program, FutureReadyNYC, which provides students with real-world job experience.

To improve the quality of life for families, Adams highlighted the cityā€™s efforts to create cleaner and greener spaces. He announced a $1 billion investment in city pools, along with programs to ensure families have access to safe and clean public spaces. Additionally, the city will expand cleaning efforts at parks and schoolyards and increase access to recreational spaces in underserved neighborhoods.

Finally, Adams revealed plans for the Kingsbridge Armory, a sweeping redevelopment project that will provide a mix of affordable housing, commercial, and cultural spaces, in collaboration with state and federal officials. Through these initiatives, Mayor Adams aims to make New York City a more affordable, safer, and family-friendly place for generations to come.
