In a heartfelt address at the NYPD recruit graduation ceremony, Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch have praised the newest class of officers for their dedication, diversity, and commitment to serving New York City.

Commissioner Tisch opened the ceremony by highlighting the importance of policing as a noble calling, stating, “Policing is not just a job; it’s a calling. New Yorkers will call for you in distress, and when they see you, they will feel safer. You are ready.”

Tisch emphasized the diverse backgrounds of the 625 graduates, noting that over 70% are native New Yorkers, speaking 39 different languages, with 145 officers born in 35 countries, and 58 having served in the U.S. armed forces. “You are a reflection of all the people who make New York great, and through your choice to serve, you make it even greater.”

She also shared the story of Officer Gabriella Kelly, whose great-great-grandfather joined the NYPD in 1896, marking a legacy of service spanning generations. Tisch concluded with a traditional Priestly Blessing, wishing the graduates safety and peace.

Mayor Adams reflected on his own journey in the NYPD and the significance of service. Drawing on his personal experience, he shared, “Back in 1984, I walked into this department, and my mother was there, beaming with pride. This is what it’s all about—contributing to the city we love.”

Addressing the graduates, Adams praised their role in upholding the American spirit. “You have an obligation to protect the land of the free and the home of the brave. Our flag will continue to fly because of you.”

The Mayor concluded with a hopeful vision for the graduates’ futures, encouraging them to rise through the ranks and one day even aspire to be mayor. “Congratulations, class. Let’s ensure we remain the greatest city in the world.”
