South Korean prosecutors have renewed their request to extend the detention of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, local media reported on Saturday. This follows a court decision on Friday rejecting an earlier bid to prolong his custody.

According to Yonhap News Agency, prosecutors are now seeking to detain Yoon until February 6, citing the need for further investigations. Yoon, who was arrested on Sunday, can legally be held for up to 10 days, with the option of a 10-day extension.

The renewed request comes after the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials transferred a martial law probe case to prosecutors on Thursday. Yoon is under investigation for allegedly orchestrating the controversial December 3 martial law declaration and abusing his power by deploying troops to the National Assembly to prevent lawmakers from overturning the decree.

Yoon, impeached by parliament on December 14, has refused to cooperate with questioning by both prosecutors and the anti-corruption body. He remains suspended from office while the Constitutional Court reviews his impeachment.

Should the court uphold the impeachment, South Korea will face a presidential election within two months. If dismissed, Yoon will be reinstated as president.
