Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced it hosted a joint “labor committee” meeting with Taliban representatives in Doha on Wednesday, focusing on labor relations between the two sides.

The meeting was co-chaired by Sheikha Najwa bint Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatar’s Deputy Minister of Labor, and Mohammad Amin Anis, head of labor deployment at the Taliban-led Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs.

The Taliban have previously engaged in discussions with Qatar about facilitating Afghan worker migration. Recently, the Taliban’s Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs held a meeting in Kabul to address the “legal facilitation” of Afghan labor migration abroad, reportedly under the directive of Taliban leader Haibatullah Akhundzada. The meeting was chaired by Abdulmanan Omari, the Taliban’s Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, with attendance from senior officials including Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi.

Despite these efforts, Afghan citizens continue to face dire economic conditions. Job opportunities have significantly decreased since the Taliban’s return to power, leading to widespread poverty and food insecurity. Many families struggle to afford even a single meal a day.

“Under the Taliban’s rule, hunger and poverty have expanded to unprecedented levels,” said a Kabul resident, echoing the concerns of many who are grappling with unemployment and economic instability.
