A new Senate bill seeks to prevent U.S. taxpayer dollars from indirectly supporting the Taliban, according to Representative Tim Burchett, a Republican from Tennessee. Announced on Friday, the “No Tax Dollars for Terrorists Act” would compel the State Department to develop stringent policies to ensure American aid cannot be accessed by the Taliban.

“This bill is a critical step to ensure American taxpayers aren’t unknowingly funding terrorists,” Burchett said, acknowledging the efforts of Senators Tim Sheehy of Montana, Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, and Bill Hagerty of Tennessee, who sponsored the measure.

The proposed legislation also mandates detailed reporting on cash assistance programs in Afghanistan, requiring the State Department to outline specific measures taken to safeguard funds. The move comes in response to mounting concerns about the misuse of U.S. aid following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021.

Criticism of the Biden administration’s handling of Afghan aid has intensified, with a recent report by the U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) raising alarms about insufficient safeguards. The report warned that American financial assistance might inadvertently be benefiting the Taliban, sparking bipartisan calls for stronger oversight.

Burchett urged President Biden to back the bill, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability in foreign aid. “This legislation is essential to ensuring taxpayer money isn’t funding corruption or terrorism,” he stated.

As lawmakers push for tighter controls, the bill underscores the urgency of addressing lingering concerns about U.S. aid distribution in Afghanistan.
