Ukraine’s chief army psychiatrist has been arrested on charges of “illegal enrichment,” accused of amassing over $1 million since the onset of Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced the arrest, revealing that the accused, who served on a commission determining individuals’ fitness for military service, failed to declare substantial assets.
While the SBU did not name the suspect, it is believed to be Oleh Druz, previously identified as the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ chief psychiatrist. The investigation uncovered ownership of three apartments in or near Kyiv, one in Odesa, two plots of land, and multiple luxury BMW cars. During a search of his residence, officials found $152,000 and €34,000 in cash. The undeclared properties were reportedly registered under the names of his wife, children, and other associates.
Druz now faces up to ten years in prison for illegal enrichment and falsifying declarations. This isn’t his first brush with corruption; in 2017, he was implicated in a similar case involving undeclared SUVs and properties, leading to his suspension.
Ukraine has long struggled with endemic corruption. Recent anti-corruption efforts have led to the dismissal of over 30 conscription officials accused of taking bribes, and the abolition of military medical commissions following bribery scandals related to military service exemptions.
