Hans Grundberg, the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen, concluded his visit to Sana’a today, after engaging in high-level discussions with political and military leaders. The talks focused on rejuvenating the political process and tackling the challenges impeding peace in the war-torn region.

Grundberg emphasized the necessity of national and regional de-escalation to create an environment conducive to meaningful dialogue. He urged the parties to agree on tangible steps that would pave the way for a sustainable political process aimed at achieving long-term peace and stability in Yemen. Addressing economic challenges and improving living conditions were also key points of discussion, alongside advancing preparations for a ceasefire—an essential element of the roadmap toward a political resolution.

“I am determined to safeguard the progress made to date on the roadmap and keep focus on the prospects for peace in Yemen,” Grundberg affirmed, underscoring his commitment to the peace process.

The envoy also addressed the issue of conflict-related detainees, building on progress from previous negotiations held in Oman in July 2024. He highlighted the importance of this file in building confidence between the warring parties and advancing prior commitments. Grundberg stressed that prioritizing this humanitarian issue is crucial for fostering trust, which could pave the way for broader agreements and signal a serious commitment to peace.

In a poignant start to his visit, Grundberg met with the family of a UN colleague who has been arbitrarily detained by Ansar Allah since June 2024. He expressed deep compassion for their ordeal and reassured them of ongoing UN efforts to secure the release of all detained personnel. Grundberg also extended solidarity to the families of other detainees, acknowledging their shared pain and the urgent need for their release.

Throughout his discussions, Grundberg strongly urged Ansar Allah to immediately and unconditionally release all detained personnel from the UN, NGOs, civil society, and diplomatic missions. He echoed the UN Secretary General’s condemnation of arbitrary detentions, calling them unacceptable violations of international law.

“We must protect the role of civil society and humanitarian personnel. They make vital contributions to peace and rebuilding Yemen,” Grundberg stated, reiterating the critical role these groups play in the country’s recovery and peace efforts.
