The United States and Nigeria have signed a $2,095,000 grant to assess the feasibility of deploying over 90,000 kilometers of fiber optic infrastructure across Nigeria, aiming to bolster the nation’s digital connectivity and economic growth.

Announced at the inaugural U.S.-Nigeria Technology Dialogue on January 10, 2025, in Washington, D.C., the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s National Broadband Plan (2020–2025). The plan targets a leap in broadband penetration from 42.27% to 70%, ultimately aiming to provide affordable, reliable internet access to 90% of the population.

Deputy Secretary Kurt Campbell, who led the dialogue, emphasized the broader impact of the partnership: “This collaboration is more than just infrastructure—it’s about empowering communities, fostering innovation, and driving economic opportunities across Nigeria. By investing in digital connectivity, we are laying the groundwork for a more inclusive and prosperous future.”

Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, echoed these sentiments, stating, “This grant represents a critical step in our journey towards a digitally inclusive Nigeria. It’s not just about connecting people to the internet; it’s about connecting them to opportunities, education, and a global economy.”

The dialogue also featured a roundtable with over 25 U.S. and Nigerian companies, covering sectors like AI, telecommunications, and cybersecurity. Key discussions focused on fostering innovation and digital talent. Both governments also agreed to a virtual expert exchange on AI-enabled biotechnology, aiming to address health and food security challenges in sub-Saharan Africa.
