President Donald Trump has announced that the US will impose tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China, effective Saturday. The tariffs, ranging from 10% to 25%, aim to boost domestic manufacturing, raise revenues, and pressure the countries to cooperate on stopping illegal immigration and fentanyl smuggling.
Trump confirmed the tariffs would go into effect, stating, “Starting tomorrow, those tariffs will be in place.” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt added, “These are promises made and promises kept by the president.”
Canada and Mexico have warned of retaliatory measures, while China emphasized the need for dialogue. Liu Pengyu, spokesman for the Chinese embassy, cautioned, “There is no winner in a trade war or tariff war.”
The move has sparked concerns of a wider trade conflict, with experts warning of “disastrous consequences” for the US economy.
