The US Senate voted Friday to pass a Republican-backed spending bill just ahead of a midnight deadline, preventing a government shutdown. The short-term measure was approved in a 54-46 vote, ensuring federal operations continue through the end of September. Largely passing along party lines, the bill now heads to President Donald Trump for his signature.

The legislation includes a modest increase in defense spending while cutting $13 billion from non-defense programs, reflecting Republican efforts to curb domestic expenditures. Democrats sharply criticized the bill, calling it a “blank check” for Trump and accusing Republicans of failing to prevent the administration from slashing previously approved congressional funding.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, acknowledging the political dilemma, admitted Thursday that while the continuing resolution (CR) passed by the House was “very bad,” allowing a government shutdown would have consequences that are “much, much worse.” Despite Democratic opposition to the bill’s funding cuts, Schumer and other lawmakers ultimately prioritized avoiding a shutdown over blocking the measure.

With Trump expected to sign the bill, the vote brings temporary relief to federal agencies and workers who had braced for a potential lapse in funding. However, the broader debate over government spending is far from over, with further clashes expected as Congress negotiates long-term budget priorities in the coming months.
