Nigeria reaffirms strong US ties as new trade chamber leader outlines vision

Nigeria has reaffirmed its long-standing strategic partnership with the United States, emphasizing continued cooperation despite rising global economic uncertainty driven by protectionist trade policies. Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, made the declaration on Saturday during the 65th anniversary celebration of the Nigerian-American Chamber of Commerce (NACC), which also marked the inauguration of its new president, Sheriff Balogun.

“The relationship between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the United States of America is a long and strategic one; the economic ties are deep, the human relations are deep, and they will continue to be so,” Oduwole said. “So even as we face turbulent times globally and economic headwinds, we remain committed and steadfast to fostering this strong relationship, and this chamber will serve a critical role in making sure that we pave the pathway for mutually beneficial relationships.”

Receiving an award at the event, Oduwole praised the NACC for its role in advancing economic ties between both countries. Her remarks come amid growing global concerns over the United States’ imposition of tariffs, which has shaken international trade relationships.

Sheriff Balogun, the newly inaugurated NACC president, accepted his role with “deep humility and a profound sense of responsibility,” and thanked the board and members for their trust. He outlined his vision for the chamber, built on the pillars of expansion, innovation, and impact.

Balogun pledged to strengthen the chamber’s mission of facilitating trade and investment between Nigeria and the US through “high-level dialogue, strategic missions, and stronger engagement with US businesses and government entities.” He revealed plans to expand the chamber’s footprint by establishing new chapters across Nigeria and in the United States, adding to its current presence in Maryland, Atlanta, and Houston.

Central to his agenda is a focus on supporting MSMEs, unlocking finance, promoting entrepreneurship, and enhancing Nigeria’s export capabilities to the US. He also stressed the importance of public-private partnerships to attract investment and open new markets for Nigerian businesses.

A major highlight of the evening was the announcement of the construction of the NACC’s permanent headquarters. “This centre will be the heartbeat of our vision to build the next wave of Nigerian leaders and entrepreneurs,” Balogun said, describing it as “a symbol of our ambition, resilience, and enduring legacy.”

The grand ceremony drew an impressive roster of dignitaries, including several state governors, a representative of the US Ambassador to Nigeria, the Deputy Ambassador of the Netherlands, and traditional monarchs. Several individuals and organisations were also honored for their outstanding contributions to various sectors and their role in deepening Nigeria-US relations.
