As the New York Jets prepare to break a four-game losing streak against the New England Patriots this Sunday, defensive standout Quincy Williams finds himself at the center of controversy after receiving a hefty $45,020 fine from the NFL.
The fine, announced by NFL insider Tom Pelissero, stems from what the league deemed “unnecessary roughness/use of helmet” in a tackle on Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jaylen Warren just short of the Jets’ end zone.
In a swift response on X, Williams voiced his frustration, questioning how he is expected to make such tackles. “How am I supposed to make this tackle? My shoulder ain’t that far from my head. He’s lowering his helmet to make contact with me. I WILL NOT GET RAN OVER!!! #Flagfootball #Twohandtouch,” he posted, highlighting the challenges defenders face in a game that increasingly emphasizes player safety.
This is not the first time the league has penalized Williams, who has received five fines over his six-year career, with four of those in the past three seasons while with the Jets. His reputation for aggressive play has contributed to the financial hits, as all of his NFL fines have been for unnecessary roughness.
Despite the fine, Williams continues to be a key contributor to the Jets’ defense. In last week’s 37-15 loss to Pittsburgh, he recorded five tackles, bringing his season total to 48—tied for second-most on the team. Last season, he achieved a career-high with 139 tackles, further solidifying his role as a defensive leader.
