New York City Mayor Eric Adams has  addressed the city today, assuring New Yorkers that the administration is fully prepared to protect and preserve local values under incoming President Donald Trump’s leadership.

Adams emphasized New York City’s resilience and unwavering commitment to democratic principles, promising to work with the Trump administration to support New Yorkers while standing firm on issues such as reproductive rights, immigration, and LGBTQ+ protections.

“We respect the will of the power of the people,” said Adams, acknowledging Trump’s election. However, he underscored that while protests would be respected, “there will be zero tolerance for actions that cross the line” into violence or disorderly conduct. Police presence, led by Interim Police Commissioner Tom Donlon, will ensure peaceful demonstrations remain lawful, Adams assured.

First Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer highlighted the turnout, with over 2.4 million ballots cast, signaling robust civic engagement. “New Yorkers should rest assured that we have been preparing for various outcomes,” she said, stressing the city’s readiness to address potential shifts in federal funding or policy.

Adams reiterated New York’s dedication to defending the rights of marginalized groups, including women and immigrants, and preserving the city’s status as a sanctuary for those pursuing the American Dream. “No matter who is president… this city will always stand up for the rights of women, our immigrant brothers and sisters, our LGBTQ+ community, and millions of others,” he affirmed.

As New York City braces for potential changes under the new administration, Adams called on residents to stay engaged: “Democracy is not something that happens every four years. It’s the work we do every day, especially here in New York City.”
