U.S. President Donald Trump has paid tribute to Charlie, a young American activist recently assassinated, describing him as a leader with immense potential and a rare ability to connect with young people.
Speaking at a joint news conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump said:
“Just last week, a great American, Charlie, was heinously assassinated for speaking his mind. He was a great young man with an incredible future. Some people even said he might be president someday.”
The president recalled a personal conversation with him: “I told him, ‘Charlie, I think you have a good shot someday at being president.’”
Trump praised Charlie’s passion for young people, saying: “He just wanted to take care of youths. He loved youths. I had never seen anybody relate with youths like Charlie.”
He also thanked the British public for their sympathy, noting: “I appreciate the many British citizens who have offered their condolences. Again, Charlie was a great person.”
The president confirmed that he would be attending a service in Charlie’s honour on Sunday: “We will be going out to a service, just to celebrate Charlie and all that he has done. So incredible.”
