Mayor of Banjul, Hon. Rohey Malick Lowe, has extended heartfelt congratulations to Zohran Kwame Mamdani on his historic election as the first Muslim Mayor of New York City.

In a statement issued on behalf of the City of Banjul and the Local Elected Women’s Network of Africa (REFELA), Lowe described Mamdani’s victory as a powerful symbol of hope, progress, and unity between Africa and the global community.

“We celebrate with immense pride not only your victory but the powerful ideals it embodies,” she said. “Your commitment to racial, economic, and social justice resonates deeply with the foundational struggles and aspirations of cities across Africa.”

Lowe expressed admiration for Mamdani’s journey, noting that his ascent to lead a global city like New York carries profound meaning for Africans everywhere.

“To witness a native son of our continent, bearing the distinguished name Kwame, ascend to lead a metropolis of New York’s stature is a moment of singular significance,” she stated.

She praised the new mayor’s vision for inclusive and equitable urban governance, saying it mirrors the principles REFELA champions — women’s empowerment, community development, and the dismantling of systemic barriers.

“Your vision for a more equitable and inclusive urban future is a powerful reflection of the principles we champion through REFELA — principles that empower women, uplift communities, and dismantle systemic barriers,” she added.

The Banjul Mayor also expressed her desire to strengthen ties between New York and African cities through cooperation and shared learning.

“We are keen to build upon the strong ties between New York and African municipalities, fostering a partnership where mutual learning and solidarity pave the way for transformative governance. We would be honored to welcome you to Africa to further this critical dialogue,” she wrote.

In closing, Lowe offered prayers for Mamdani’s leadership and success: “As you guide this great metropolis, we pray that Allah grants you the wisdom, strength, and clarity to navigate all challenges and lead with the courage the moment demands.”

Hon. Rohey Malick Lowe serves as Mayor of Banjul, President of REFELA, and Vice President of the Global Parliament of Mayors.
