President Barrow Prioritizes Agriculture and Road Development in North Bank Region

Agriculture and road infrastructure were at the forefront of discussions during President Adama Barrow’s first general meeting of his annual tour in Maka Balla Manneh.
Community leaders and residents urged the government to prioritize the construction of motorable feeder roads in remote areas. Responding, President Barrow assured Macca Balla Manneh and surrounding communities in Nuimis and Jokadou of improved road networks as part of his administration’s development agenda for the North Bank Region.
Addressing concerns over agricultural inputs, the President highlighted the government’s subsidy on fertilizer, which reduced its cost from D2,950 to D1,100, a reduction of D1,850. In addition, 1,143 metric tons of fertilizer were distributed free of charge to farmers nationwide for the 2025/2026 cropping season.
To further boost agricultural production, the government also distributed nearly 237 metric tons of certified rice seeds and 184 metric tons of certified maize seeds to farmers at no cost.
Regarding the new post-harvest digital payment system, President Barrow explained that the initiative is part of a regulatory framework designed to ensure transparency and prevent mismanagement. He assured farmers of multiple payment options and timely disbursement in the upcoming trading season.
On women’s economic empowerment, the President noted that since 2021, women in the North Bank Region have benefited from D2.8 million under the Women Enterprises Fund, supporting 2,025 women to enhance their livelihoods. He also highlighted the establishment of the Ministry of Gender and pledged to continue initiatives, including the construction of gardens to further empower women economically.
President Barrow reaffirmed his government’s commitment to improving the lives and livelihoods of Gambians, emphasizing development, accountability, and inclusive growth.
