Mayor Eric Adams swore in Jessica Tisch as the city’s 48th police commissioner, marking a significant milestone in the department’s leadership. Tisch, who previously served as the commissioner of the Department of Sanitation (DSNY), becomes the second woman to hold the prestigious position.

During the ceremony at One Police Plaza, Mayor Adams shared a deeply personal reflection, comparing his commitment to the NYPD with his overprotective love for his son, Jordan. “This is my baby. This is my Jordan,” said Adams, emphasizing the immense responsibility that comes with the role of police commissioner. He further acknowledged Tisch’s remarkable leadership, praising her record in government and public service, and stressed the importance of supporting the officers who protect the city.

Tisch, whose journey through public service spans over 17 years, expressed deep gratitude for her mentors, including the trailblazing women of the NYPD who shattered glass ceilings before her. “These three-star chiefs took a sledgehammer to the glass ceiling at the New York City Police Department before my eyes,” Tisch said, referencing the role models who paved the way for her leadership.

Tisch’s transition from sanitation to law enforcement is seen as a seamless one. Anthony Pennolino, Chief of Department at DSNY, commended her ability to lead in the most challenging circumstances, noting her unwavering dedication to the workforce. “She’s a lion ready to pounce on anybody that mistreats her workforce,” he said.

In her speech, Tisch vowed to continue the NYPD’s legacy of protecting the city with integrity, emphasizing the profound impact of the role. “The police exist to eliminate fear and disorder,” she said. “Your cops, like generations before them, nobly put their lives on the line each and every time they put on that uniform to protect you and your families.”

With her family by her side, including her children and mother holding her grandmother’s Bible, Tisch took the oath of office, committing to serve the city with honor and dedication. Her leadership is expected to usher in a new era of innovation and safety for the NYPD as she leads the department into the future.
