Israel has released 90 Palestinian prisoners, primarily women and minors, following the return of three Israeli hostages by Hamas. The detainees were transported from Israel’s Ofer prison near Ramallah in the early hours of Monday, marking a key moment in the ongoing truce efforts.

According to the Palestinian Authority’s Commission for Prisoners’ Affairs, those released had been held on charges ranging from stone-throwing to more serious accusations like attempted murder. The releases align with the first phase of a ceasefire agreement, which commenced on Sunday morning after initial delays. The truce was set back as Israel awaited confirmation of the names of hostages Hamas planned to release.

Under the ceasefire terms, Hamas will release a total of 33 hostages over six weeks, with Israel reciprocating by freeing hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. The first phase saw the release of three Israeli women—Romi Gonen, Emily Damari, and Doron Steinbrecher—who were transferred from Gaza to the Israeli military via the Red Cross. The women are currently receiving medical care in Tel Aviv and are reported to be in stable condition.

Israel’s commitment includes the release of 30-50 Palestinian prisoners for each hostage freed by Hamas. As part of the broader ceasefire agreement, phase two will involve steps towards a permanent resolution, including the release of all remaining hostages by Hamas and the freeing of approximately 1,000 Palestinian prisoners by Israel. This phase will also see the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza.

The third phase focuses on Gaza’s reconstruction, with Hamas expected to return the bodies of deceased hostages in exchange for a comprehensive rebuilding plan from Israel.

The conflict, ignited by Hamas’ cross-border attack in October 2023, has claimed over 1,200 Israeli lives and resulted in the abduction of 250 individuals. Israel’s retaliatory offensive has led to more than 46,000 Palestinian deaths, with local health officials noting that women and children comprise more than half of the casualties. The ongoing violence has not only destabilized the region but also fueled global protests and intensified political tensions within Israel.
