The Lebanese army announced Saturday the completion of its deployment across nine southern towns, following a phased Israeli withdrawal under a cease-fire agreement in effect since November 27.

This deployment spans critical areas in the Tyre district, including Ras al-Naqoura, Alma al-Shaab, al-Dhahira, Tayr Harfa, and Majdel Zoun. Additionally, the towns of Aitaroun, Bint Jbeil, al-Salehni, and al-Qaouzah in the Bint Jbeil district now fall under Lebanese army control.

“The Lebanese army is working to strengthen its deployment and secure key points in coordination with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the five-member committee overseeing the cease-fire,” the army’s official statement emphasized. This committee comprises representatives from the United States, France, Lebanon, Israel, and UNIFIL, reflecting a concerted international effort to maintain peace.

However, the cease-fire’s implementation has been marred by violations. Lebanese authorities report over 455 breaches by Israeli forces, resulting in 37 fatalities since the agreement’s inception. This fragile peace seeks to conclude over 14 months of hostilities between the Israeli army and Hezbollah, ignited during the Gaza war in October 2023.

As part of the agreement, Israeli forces are mandated to withdraw south of the Blue Line, with the Lebanese army assuming control within a 60-day window. Despite these efforts, the human toll remains harrowing. The Lebanese Health Ministry disclosed that the conflict, which erupted on October 8, 2023, has claimed 4,068 lives and injured 16,668 people, including women, children, and healthcare workers.

The Lebanese army’s deployment marks a crucial milestone, yet the road to enduring peace remains fraught with challenges as the region continues to grapple with the aftermath of prolonged conflict.
