A deadly Russian drone strike on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy has left at least four people dead, Ukrainian officials confirmed Thursday. The attack, which struck a high-rise residential building, also injured nine others, according to the Sumy regional state administration.

Ukraine’s military reported that Russian forces launched 81 drones overnight, of which 37 were intercepted over multiple regions, including Cherkasy, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, Khmelnytskyi, Kirovohrad, Kyiv, Poltava, Odesa, Sumy, and Zhytomyr. Despite these defenses, damage was widespread. In Odesa, Governor Oleh Kiper stated on Telegram that falling drone debris hit two residential buildings, a grain warehouse, and a hospital. Officials in Zhytomyr also reported six houses damaged by drone fragments.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry said Thursday that it had downed three Ukrainian drones over Belgorod and another two over Bryansk overnight.

As the conflict intensifies, Ukraine is also grappling with a pause in crucial U.S. aid. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Wednesday he had received an initial report on “critical programs” that have been suspended due to an audit of foreign aid ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump. According to Zelenskyy, the frozen funds impact key sectors, including energy, veteran programs, and border crossings. He added that Ukrainian officials have been directed to conduct their own audit of affected areas.
