US President Donald Trump has reiterated his warning to the BRICS nations, pledging to impose 100% import duties on goods from these countries if they attempt to create a new currency or abandon the US dollar.
In a post on his Truth Social network, Trump stated, “We are going to require a commitment from these seemingly hostile countries that they will neither create a new BRICS currency, nor back any other currency to replace the mighty US dollar, or they will face 100% tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful US economy.”
He further declared, “The idea that the BRICS countries are trying to move away from the dollar, while we stand by and watch, is OVER.” This statement marks his continued stance on safeguarding the dollar’s dominance in global trade.
BRICS, originally formed in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, expanded with South Africa’s addition in 2011. The group has since grown, with Egypt, Iran, the UAE, and Ethiopia joining in 2024. Saudi Arabia is also considering an invitation to join, though its officials have not yet confirmed the decision.
