A state inmate ignited a fire inside his cell , triggering an emergency response at Fishkill Correctional Facility that has left several correction officers injured. The incident occurred around 7:10 a.m. and prompted the deployment of multiple EMS units to the prison, which houses nearly 2,000 inmates and operates as a multi-level security facility.

According to sources, the inmate started the fire in his cell, causing flames to spread rapidly. Fortunately, the facility’s fire brigade, composed of corrections officers, was able to control the blaze before it endangered other inmates. However, the heavy smoke that filled the area made breathing difficult for many, particularly 30 corrections officers.

Emergency personnel, coordinated by Ambulnz Car 3, set up a triage in the prison gym, where all injured were evaluated for smoke inhalation. Five patients, including three requiring advanced life support due to aggravated asthmatic conditions, were transported to a hospital in Newburgh. Two additional officers were taken by a state prison van for further treatment. None of the injuries were reported as life-threatening.

Local agencies including Beacon Volunteer Ambulance Corps and City of Beacon Medic 1/Ambulnz responded with ambulances, and EMS personnel were cleared from the scene by 9:00 a.m.
