Togo has entered a groundbreaking agreement with American company Nano Nuclear Energy (NNE) to harness the power of micro-nuclear reactors, marking a major step in diversifying its energy sources, expanding electricity access, and reducing its environmental footprint.

The agreement was formalized at a signing ceremony on December 2, chaired by Togolese President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe. Robert Koffi Messan Eklo, Togo’s Minister of Mines and Energy Resources, and Ian Farnan, President of the Cambridge Nuclear Energy Centre, signed the documents, underscoring Togo’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge solutions for its energy challenges.

“This project reflects our determination to ensure sustainable development while addressing the pressing energy needs of our citizens,” said President Gnassingbe. To further support the initiative, he announced the establishment of the Togo Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC), tasked with promoting the peaceful and innovative applications of nuclear technologies.

Currently, about 70% of Togo’s population has access to electricity, primarily in urban areas. The introduction of small modular reactors (SMRs), a next-generation nuclear technology, is expected to enhance electricity production capacity, reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels, and significantly lower environmental impacts.

“These micro-reactor systems are very well suited to the situation in Togo, where energy demand is changing rapidly,” remarked Ian Farnan. The project is seen as a model for responsible and inclusive energy development in West Africa, providing a blueprint for other nations seeking sustainable energy solutions.

By embracing micro-nuclear reactors, Togo positions itself as a leader in energy innovation in the region, aiming to secure reliable and clean energy for its growing population.
