North Korea successfully tested underwater-to-surface strategic cruise missiles on Saturday, state media KCNA reported Sunday. The missiles traveled 1,500 kilometers and flew for over two hours before hitting their targets. The test, described as a launch of an “important weapon system,” was overseen by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Kim declared that the country’s military deterrence capabilities were being “perfected more thoroughly” and reaffirmed North Korea’s commitment to bolstering its defense forces. “Kim Jong Un affirmed that the DPRK will always make strenuous efforts… to perform its important mission and duty for defending sustainable and lasting peace and stability on the basis of more powerfully developed military muscle in the future,” KCNA quoted him as saying.

In a separate statement on Sunday, North Korea’s foreign ministry warned of the “toughest counteraction” against the United States, accusing Washington of refusing to recognize Pyongyang’s sovereignty. It blamed rising tensions on the military alliance and joint drills between the US and South Korea.

The statement followed comments from former US President Donald Trump, who said Thursday that he would reach out to Kim again, citing the working relationship they developed during his term. Despite this, North Korea remains firm in its stance, with KCNA emphasizing its resolve to strengthen its military capabilities.
