The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has warned that terrorism has escalated beyond the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin, now posing a threat to all of West Africa. The warning came from H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, during discussions at the United Nations Security Council on regional cooperation against terrorism.

Dr. Touray highlighted early-warning data indicating 450 attacks and over 1,900 deaths in the region so far in 2025. He further noted that extremist groups are engaging in “economic warfare”, restricting fuel supplies and disrupting trade to destabilize affected countries.

In response, ECOWAS is accelerating the deployment of its standby force, beginning with 1,650 personnel and aiming to scale up to 5,000, with the support of regional partners.

The ECOWAS Commission President warned that fragmented efforts and mistrust among member states continue to hinder an effective regional response. He urged the Security Council to assist in rebuilding confidence, securing predictable funding, and strengthening coordinated action across the region.

Dr. Touray’s remarks underscore growing concerns about the spread of terrorism in West Africa and the urgent need for concerted, collaborative measures to protect peace and stability.
