Hon Afolabi condemns derelict state of hostels in Nigerian tertiary institutions
The House Representatives member, Hon Olalekan Rasheed Afolabi, representing Ifelodun, Boripe and Odo Otin Federal Constituency in Osun State, has condemned the derelict state of the hostels in Nigerian institutions.
While disclosing this on Wednesday February 3, 2021, during the submission of situational reports from government-owned colleges of education, polytechnics and universities to the House of Representatives, Afolabi called for urgent intervention.
“Today at the plenary, I moved a motion titled: ‘The Parlous State of Hostels in Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria; A Call for Urgent Intervention,” he wrote.
He added, “I put forward with utmost concern, the situational reports from Colleges of Education, Polytechnics and Universities owned by Government which revealed gory tales of students being kept at subhuman levels in schools with gross infrastructural decay and deficits.”
The House of Rep member highlighted the importance of provision of a conducive hostel accommodation in relation to other climes to improve students learning and better academic performance among others.
Afolabi also urged government to pay adequate attention to the education sector especially in the area of infrastructural development.
“I also proposed a Public, Private Partnership (PPP) for tertiary institutions hostels development in such a way that would allow the developers to dispose the properties to the schools after an agreeable time.
“The motion was generally debated and overwhelmingly approved by the House for further legislative action through House Committee on Tertiary Education,” he added.
