Nigerians elect Obelawo President of Yoruba Community in Senegal

The Yoruba Community in Senegal, popularly known as Egbe Omo Oodua, has conducted a general election on December 12, 2020, which saw the emergence of Sulaiman Olayinka Obelawo as the President-elect of the association.

In his acceptance speech, while commending the electoral officials, registered electorates and representatives of the Nigerian Embassy in Dakar, who served as observers throughout the electoral process, Obelawo called for unity among the Nigerian community in Senegal.

“I hereby accept the results of this election and I’m very glad to be elected as the President of Egbe Omo Oduduwa in Senegal,” said Obelawo. “I would like this opportunity to remind us that our unity as Yoruba and Nigerians in this country is paramount.”

“We should join hands together. My doors are open to all members of this association, including those who, for one reason or the other, could not witness today’s election. Please convey my message to them that I’m more than willing to work with any progressive Yorubas, who are genuinely living and working or studying in this country, I am in this noble shoe to selfless serve the entire Egbe Omo Oduduwa in any part of Senegal,” he added.

He then called on his opponents to join him to join him to work together as a team in order to establish a more formidable Yoruba Community in Senegal.

“We should all know that we’re one irrespective of any group we belong to. Here in Senegal, we are one, so we should work together to uphold the positive image Yorubas are known for across the globe,” Obelawo concluded. This election, which was described as free, fair and peaceful by the observers, also brought in other executive members of the association like Akeem Kunle Kareem (Vice President), Michael Adewole Ajibade (Secretary General), Rasheed Adewale Sanusi (Assistant Secretary General), Bisola Olamide Ojo (Treasurer), Habeeb Balogun (Assistant Treasurer), Ayopo F. Orunmuyi (Financial Secretary), Lateef Ojo (Welfare Officer/PRO), Ifeoluwapo A. Smith (Assistant PRO), Olabiyi Opeyemi (Regional Chairman), and Francis Oladele Adedipe (Assistant Regional Chairman).
