Turkey-Syria Earthquake: AU sympathizes with countries
The Chairperson of the AU Commission, H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, has sympathized with Turkey and Syria.
He expressed shock and deep condolences on the earthquake that hit the two countries.
The condolence was contained in a statement signed on Tuesday February 7, 2023.
“The AU Commission expressed his deep shock and sorrow, alongside the world community, with the governments and peoples of Türkiye and Syrithe,” Mahamat said in a statement.
More than 4,900 people have died in Syria and Turkey following two earthquakes and hundreds of aftershocks.
A magnitude 5.7 earthquake has struck eastern Turkey, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre.
The chairperson reiterated the deepest condolences to, and strong solidarity of the African Union and the African Continent, with the families of the victims and the governments and peoples of Türkiye and Syria.
The chairperson further welcomed the global outpouring of solidarity and support for the Turkish and Syrian peoples during this time of unimaginable tragedy.
The chairperson reiterated the determination of the African Union to continue with its efforts to restore peace, security and stability on the continent through inclusive dialogue and mediation efforts, in close collaboration with Member States, Regional Economic Communities, AU-led Youth and Women mediation mechanisms and other stakeholders.
