Authorities in Bosnia has apprehended a child for allegedly shooting a teacher at an elementary school in the northeastern city of Lukavac.

“The incident, which took place on Wednesday, has raised concerns about school safety in the region. The suspect, who is under police supervision, is not yet 14 years old and had recently transferred to another school after a disciplinary measure was imposed.”

“Ahmed Omerovic, the education minister for Tuzla, stated that the child had been moved to a different school at the beginning of the second semester. The incident occurred on the final day of classes in the Tuzla canton. Following the shooting, the school premises were cordoned off, and law enforcement officers secured firearms and other related items for investigation.”

“The victim, an English teacher and assistant principal, sustained gunshot wounds to the neck. The injured individual was taken to the University Clinic Centre of Tuzla, where they underwent surgery. The hospital reports that the patient is in stable condition.”

“This incident comes in the wake of recent school shootings in neighboring Serbia, which deeply impacted the Balkans. Memorials and vigils were held across the former Yugoslavia, including Bosnia, to honor the victims.”

“The presence of firearms in Bosnia remains a concern, as the region experienced an influx of weapons during the 1990s war. Despite efforts to encourage citizens to surrender their firearms, a significant number of guns are still in circulation, with approximately 31 out of every 100 citizens owning a firearm, according to the Small Arms Survey research group.”
