The Global Parliament of Mayors, which represents the voice of the Mayors, has elected the Mayor of Banjul, the Gambia, Rohey Malick Lowe, an executive committee member.

Lowe was elected for a three-years term on Tuesday October, 2020, at the Annual General Meeting of the GPM.

While congratulating the Mayor, the Executive Director GPM, Caroline Schep, said the GPM is very proud of the appointment of Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe, the first Gambian female mayor and recently elected President of African Capital Cities Forum.

“Mayor Lowe’s strong city leadership, her commitment to advance international cooperation and especially female political leadership will benefit the Global Parliament of Mayors in its endeavour to strengthen solidarity amongst mayors to take position on critical challenges that face humanity to create better solutions for the world and its citizens,” Schep said.

The Global Parliament of Mayors is driven by mayors and their city leadership.

The GPM is governed by an Executive Committee of nine mayors, representing four continents and chaired by Mayor Peter Kurz of Mannheim, Germany.

The other members of the Executive Committee are 1st Vice Chair Mayor Steve Benjamin, Columbia (USA), 2nd Vice Chair Mayor Grace Mary Mugasa, Hoima (Uganda), Treasurer Mayor Ricardo Rio, Braga (Portugal), Mayor Baikuntha Neupane, Vyas (Nepal), Mayor Jefferson Koijee, Monrovia (Liberia) and Mayor Leoluca Orlando, Palermo (Italy).

It was established in October 2017, inspired by Dr. Benjamin Barber, the author of ‘If Mayors Ruled the World’ and renowned international political theorist. Today its members represent more than 83 million citizens worldwide – a number that is steadily growing as more and more mayors realise there is strength in unity.

The GPM is a unique governance body of, by and for mayors that functions as a parliament and brings cities to the world fore. It unites, aligns and amplifies the voices of mayors in global strategy debates with nation states and international organisations, such as the United Nations.
