New York suspends police officer accused of shoplifting

New York Police Department officer, Johana Rios, has been suspended following her arrest after she was caught shoplifting items worth $125 at an upstate Walmart.

Workers at the local Walmart, an outlet about 65 miles from Midtown, saw Rios pocketing the items on Friday.

She was arrested immediately by Newburgh Town police on Friday afternoon and was charged with petit larceny.

Rio was issued a desk appearance ticket (DAT) which required her to appear in court with respect to her charge. She would as a result return to court on a later date.

Rio who was assigned to the 50th Precinct in the Kingsbridge Section of the Bronx was said to have had over $85,000 earnings as an officer last year.

In a statement by a NYPD spokeswoman on Tuesday, it was confirmed that Rio has been suspended without pay and that all other inquiries would be forwarded to Newburgh Town police.
