Trump maintains legal immunity, never violates US Constitution

Former President Donald Trump’s defense lawyer, John Lauro, has stated that Trump maintains legal immunity and did not violate the U.S. Constitution.

Lauro’s remarks were made in response to allegations that Trump pressured former Vice- President Mike Pence to overturn the election results on January 6, 2021, as well as Trump’s request to the Georgia secretary of state to uncover additional votes in the 2020 election.

Lauro, appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” asserted that “Trump’s actions on that fateful day were merely a request for Pence to pause the certification process while the House was tallying the votes.”

Lauro emphasized that this action did not breach the Constitution. He also underlined that everything Trump had done occurred during his tenure as president, rendering him immune to prosecution.

Referring to a recorded telephone call in 2020 to Georgia’s secretary of state, Lauro explained that Trump was pursuing a quest for the truth rather than engaging in criminal behavior.

In the call, Trump had famously asked the secretary of state to locate 11,780 votes, one more than required to secure victory in the state.

However, Lauro sidestepped questions related to Trump’s derogatory comments about special counsel Jack Smith.

He labeled the case related to the January 6 events as a “political prosecution” and refrained from commenting on prosecutorial matters.

These statements from Trump’s lawyer have drawn criticism from Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland, who was part of the House Jan. 6 committee investigating Trump’s potential involvement in the Capitol riot.

Raskin, also appearing on “Meet the Press,” dismissed Lauro’s assertion that technical violations of the Constitution do not constitute criminal violations.

He emphasized that “the Constitution serves to prevent attempts to undermine elections and government.”

Donald Trump’s legal challenges extend beyond this case, as he is also facing indictments in New York, Florida, and potentially Georgia.

Trump controversially remarked that these legal troubles actually bolster his popularity in polls.

He expressed a desire for more indictments, which he believes would benefit his presidential campaign.

In response to Trump’s online statements, prosecutors sought a protective order to limit public disclosures from Trump and his legal team.

This action stems from concerns that sensitive information, including grand jury transcripts, might be shared online.

Trump and his legal team are required to respond to the prosecutors’ actions by a 5 p.m. deadline on Monday. Lauro, speaking on ABC’s “This Week,” welcomed the possibility of Pence testifying in the federal case against Trump.

Lauro anticipated that Pence’s testimony would reinforce Trump’s belief that election irregularities led to inappropriate outcomes.

In response to these claims, Pence appeared on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” and clarified that he did not possess the authority to reject votes.

He emphasized that “no previous vice president in American history had claimed such authority.”
